Nocona, Intel’s first chip that will run 32-bit and 64-bit software, is expected to debut at the end of June, just within the company’s self-imposed second-quarter window.
The chip, which was announced in February, could help Intel begin to counter the growing popularity of the Opteron processor from Advanced Micro Devices. Opteron, the first 32/64-bit chip for the server market, came out in April 2003 and has been picked up by IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Sun Microsystems. Intel would not comment on the chip, but sources close to the company said that a version of Nocona for two-processor servers will come out June 28. Other versions of Nocona are expected to come out later.
