Companies should encourage employees to switch off PCs at night or continue wasting money and energy, according to research by Fujitsu Siemens.

In a report released on Monday, the PC maker claimed that about $217 million (£123 million) is wasted every year in the U.K. alone powering PCs that could have been shut down or left in hibernation mode. The report also pointed out the environmental impact of all the wasted energy.

“U.K. businesses need to consider both the financial and environmental implications of leaving a computer running and make turning off their PCs each night a policy,” said Garry Owen, head of product marketing at Fujitsu Siemens Computers, who added that simply putting a computer into standby means it still is consuming power.”

    The US Federal Government in almost demanding that all PC remain ON 24/7/365 to allow instant patching and AV updates. We are in the process of reviewing the edict from DOE stating that we must have the ability to rollout patches and AV updates in less than 24 hours to 90% of the systems. They have to be online, in a domain, and powered on at all times.... So much for saving power... Blame Microsoft for that!!!

    I'm certainly not the guy to write it, but this would seem an ideal situation for a little script taking advantage of the Wake On LAN capability with which most systems today are already equipped. All you'd need to do is have the server rouse each machine from hibernation when an update was required, then let the thing go back to sleep afterwards.

    Absolutely.. WOL is infrequently utilized, and is a great tool.

    Where I work, they also insist that we leave our systems on ensure patch/AV updates can be pushed. On a side note, we are seeing more and more laptops replace desktops in our environment, so many people are shutting them down to bring them home.

    At the very least people need to ensure that their CRT monitors power off automatically. I hate it when people disable that feature to allow their cheesy screen savers to display 24/7.
