NEW ATI Catalyst 5.13 Released

A new set of Catalyst drivers for ATI’s Radeon line of graphics cards has been released. If you’re wondering why there’s a 13th Catalyst release this year, instead of the usual 12, then read this news report posted last week. Regardless, go grab ‘em quick before they release another set.

Seeing that twelve drivers had already been released by ATI in 2005, most readers assumed that the new driver would have to come in January 2006 as Catalyst 6.1. ATI’s Secret Santa decided to release this gift earlier to PC enthusiasts with a 13th driver release in 2005 and Oh, how things have changed!

    Two questions. Do you recommend the set with or without the CC? Secondly, I've always installed overtop. Do you recommend that I remove the older version first?

    You should use the Catalyst Uninstaller (linked to above) to remove the old driver completely. Upon reboot cancel any new hardware detection popups, then install the new drivers.

    I would recommend that users don't install the Control Center. You can either visit http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=139 and download just the drivers, or you can use the above link and when installing choose Custom install and deselect Control Center.

    The problem is now though, because ATI no longer bundles or supports the old Control Panel with its new drivers (5.12 and up), which used much less resources and wasn't as invasive as the Control Center, if you need to be able to change anti-aliasing settings etc, you will sadly now need to use the Control Center. Or... do what I did and simply keep using the 5.11's (you can get them from the SM downloads section), which were the last driver set to have the Control Panel.

    But like I said, if you don't need to control the finer points of your GPU, then you should do without the CC.
