YES!! Newegg here I come!!! How long will it be before we see the effects of this? now I will see exactly what kind of markup newegg and others have since I know the distributor prices. but you know what, places like newegg that keep a huge stock of processors are gonna loose a lot of money over the next few weeks.

WELL...I wouldnt go as far as that.

the difference between 754/939 to A is a completly different architecture. AM2 is still on the K8 architecture. They just added a new memory controller and other revisions. Yes its new, but it isnt gonna be a very big performance difference. I think that AM2 was just to keep people happy until they bring out something so much better. I am waiting for K9, but will buy the cheap processors as I tend to stay a gen behind.

Nope, AM2 was so that OEM manufacturers would stay happy until the next major improvement comes out - the 65nm K8L series. AM2 gives the white box makers CPUs with slightly better performance than the previous Athlons but that use even less power. The OEMs can then offer computers with "new" model CPUs in the specifications, keeping their reputation of putting the newest available parts in their machines. It's marketing: computer makers can claim they are up to date and sellers can claim the boxes have the 'new and improved'....

Their dual core processors are still full price, and it appears that only some of the single core processors have been cut. I think newegg is trying to sell all of its stock that it paid a lot for before they lower the prices too much. because think about it, they are stuck with a stockpile of processors that cost them $$$ a week ago, and now they are worth $, so they are going to try and sell them and loose as little money as possible.

So far Newegg has dropped prices on the following single core CPU's;

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice ..........dropped 17%
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice ..........dropped 32%
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice ..........dropped 36%
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Venice ..........dropped 16%
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego .......dropped 11%

And a few of the 14x series Opteron socket 939 CPU's dropped a little. So far no price changes on any of the Dual Core X2 A64 or Opteron chips. Monarch has been a bit slower to respond but I feel they will follow suit next week. I expect the single cores to drop some more in the weeks to come and it will likely take at least 2 weeks for any change in the Dual Core arena as AMD is very very strong there right now. They are having trouble keeping up with demand on all the Dual Core's at the moment. On the other hand Intel still has a glut of overstock on their Pentium D's and will keep dropping the price to get rid of them.

Leo is absolutely correct in regard to the new AM2 (whose prices are almost right in line with socket 939 on the cuts). AM2 is also the beginning of the new socket architecture to springboard the coming new chips and their offspring.

Okay, that is 17%-36%, are we going to see an actual 50%-60% drop? I am really interested in the opty 170, i am optimistic that it will be dropped. I hope so, and it seems somewhat logical since it is on the 939 socket also.

Read the rest of the lines. The truth is out there. AMD has been doing omething with the 939 Opterons that they never did before, they are selling them as fst as they are producing them. This means that through simple economics (supply and demand) that as long as people are buying them like hotcakes they will not change the price much. After their introduction the 939 Opterons actually increased in price instead of drop like most other new parts. After the price leveled off they have been exactly the same price for the past 6 months. So untill demand dwindles they will be where they are now. This is simply a testament to just how kick ass these chips really are!!!

Kinda kicks the reason people bought AMD to start with though with their better performance for cheaper prices...

Processors not dropping in price is a bad thing when wages don't go up yet software continues to require better components.

yeh. I hope that demand does come down since the 1xx opterons are comming over to AM2 also.

The prices will drop more but it will just take time for them to get to the 50-60% price drop. If you notice the fastest selling single cores are the most marked down so far. That is because they are moving faster through the chain. Retailers don't like to loose money but the distributors get cost adjustments on inventory on hand. This week will see more drops as well as more retailers and e-tailers jumping on board.
