While Mobo makers are saying ATI is asking for 3 PCI-E slotted motherboards for their high end lines, It has everyone’s interests perked at Computex 2006.

The whispers are that ATI is now asking mobo makers to make their high-end boards with slots for three 16x GPUs. All three slots may not need to have a full 16 lanes routed to them, 4 or 8 may work out fine, but the slot physically must be 16x.

  1. Three graphics cards in a case is only slightly less ridiculous than four.

  2. Why in the hell would anyone need 3 full bandwidth slots???!!!!

Not to mention the costs to fill them all, that is completely rediculous.

  3. What about 2 videocards and a PPU or something. I dunno, who said all 3 slots were going to be videocard filled?

    ATi did

I think that is exactly what they hope to acheive

Apparently even the X1600 can potentially be an excellent PPU.

  6. It'll be like Gillette and Wilkinson Sword's battles with razor blades soon, with "how many graphics card can we get people to believe they need?"

  7. it would be better if the boards had other types of PCI-E like X8 slots.

  8. So how would they go to the "fusion" step in the # of vid card battle, 5 video cards for your games, and one for precision rendering!!
