With Intel’s latest leaps ahead, some are wondering if AMD can return the volley.

We recently published our review of Intel’s Core Duo platform and confirmed that Intel has in fact leapt ahead. Quite logically, the performance results of the Core Duo prove, yet again, Intel’s superiority in the mobile segment. Intel has managed to fit in a billion transistors on a single 65nm microprocessor. Moreover, 45nm is already in the works and 65nm is passé. To give you an idea of transistor comparison, Smithfield has 230M in contrast to Presler’s 370M.

  1. You know we need to get soemone to count those transitors! becuase they can claim 1 billion but who's going to count? it would take someone a very long time to count that.

    I think AMD has a nice bat up its sleeve and will be sending Intel across the field yet again!

    That makes every bit as much sense as the Intel advertisements with the Dell Dude and Blue Men.

    Every time AMD is "doomed" they just take more market share from Intel. (Still a ways to go though, in mobile processors.)

    All these dire predictions about AMD not able to keep up later this year when Intel fires off the latest and greatest (no, geewhiz really, not just Intel hype this time...?). So, do these pundits really think AMD has stopped R&D and is just sitting on their hands? (Their marketing people may be inept, but not AMD engineers!)

  3. What else does AMD have up their "sleeve"? I mean other then adding cores and DDR2 support..... what else do they really have? I think the 35W chips coming out are gonna be UBER, but I mean is that enough to compete really against Intel?

    I don't know. It's seems like a close tie right now and the foresee-able future, I hope AMD pulls something out cause I LOVE AMD. ActuallY I love the Opteron's if Intel would take advantage of Hyper Transport on their Core Duo platform they would kick ass too.

According to AMD the AM2 will see a performance increase with DDR-1000 how much over DDR2-800 is yet to be known. also a lot of new AM2 Boards are popping up with Nforce 5 chips... will that benfit the new AM2 chips? and how much will new cache levels soon to be increased add to the chips performance?. Casue I know there is a huge gap between Sempies and Athlons with 256 and 512. can you imagine a AMD CPU with 4MB cache that could yield some good results.

  5. Well I am just going with the more is not always better way that AMD tends to do things. I am also curious how long AMD tends to keep the Opteron archetecture. No it ain't old, it's still an emerging technology but I am probably just wishing for too much from AMD.

    All I really hear is crap, I need to write a new article about something, lets hype this up. Soon the situation will change again and AMD will be on top, then Intel, and then Cyrix.....

    All this is is healthy competition getting blown out into something it isn't. But thats just me being peeved cause I'm at work still.

I would love to see one of these companies just put something out that is a 50% increase in performance and not 10% or 12% make it worth the platform upgrade , I don't care whioch company just majorly out do the other and claim a real crown! the situtation with Nvidia and ATI is getting very pathetic!. If AMD is really looking at 12% tops upgrade in speed I see no reason to ditch the 939 socket just yet... But from what I can see Intel scrapped going for higher Ghz, AMD is still climbing. maybe we can see some 3.6Ghz Athlon 64 X2's in the future. I mean there is a nice performance increase with AMD at 200Mhz

    Actually, Cyrix was doomed. Via bought it for a song a few years ago and has made it the supplier of choice for low-end (I mean REALLY low-end) processor solutions.

    Now they still have CPUs with very little power consumption. I read a review yesterday of a guy's system build on an EPIA platform that consumed 25W total - that's system board, CPU, RAM, HDD, and CDROM. The PSU that was necessary for the task was smaller than a stick of gum.

    Unfortunately, the CPUs are no longer REALLY good, merely mediocre performers at best.

    No they didn't. I owned a Cyrix MII 366mhz and it was constantly overheating and drew more power than any K6 or PII system I had used at the time. It wasn't just my machine either, Cyrix processors were notorious for generating extreme amounts of heat and sub-par performance when compared with their Intel and AMD counter parts.

    I hear VIA actually took some of the technology and turned the C3 into a decent solution for ultra low end PCs and embedded devices, but Cyrix never made a good chip.

    Actually the EPIA I have for a development project is quite a capable folder. From what I remember of stats, it did about 450-500 PPW running at 1.2 GHz with 256 MB of PC2100. That's on the same performance scale as a t-bird but below a P-M. The thing is tiny as well for a full board including IDE, CF slot, PCMCIA, DDR and more.

  17. I had a cyrix processor in a computer back when I first joined the Navy. Damn CPU got so hot it warped OUT OF THE SOCKET after about 3 hours of continued use. This was with 3 case fans and CPU fan. That broke me from going down the cheap road again.

  18. I still have a few Cyrix laying here somewhere! I actually just threw 2 of them in the trash if I am not mistaken
