Is Dual-Core Worth It?

Chris Simon (csimon) Many enthusiasts are asking the same questions ...Is it worth my investment to purchase dual-core over single-core? Will I get equal or better performance and overclocks with an X2?

Madshrimps has posted a review of the entry level dual-core server CPU, the Opteron 165. Is it worth the investment to purchase dual-core over a single core?

“So much buzz on the Opteron Dual Core S939 since November last year; I was hoping I would get the same result my Venice delivers. By the time I got my hands on this Opteron 165 Retail Pack, the price has gone up to $330. Many said AMD might require dealers to follow the “rules”; selling Opteron to Server System Integrators rather than direct retail channels to people like you and I. I have heard rumors that AMD was pushing Opteron to retailers in hope for a better number in Server market. I really could care for less; as long as mine returns the same result as my Venice. Still, I remain spirited as most single core Opteron are doing “well” in overclocking headroom using air cooling.”

Manufacturer “stepping” is an important factor in obtaining a successful overclocker and a little research can be very beneficial.

  1. I find the dual core procs are perfect for my needs. I've enjoyed the smoothness of dual processor machines when doing multiple tasks ever since I built my first AMD dually and now I can have the same type performance using a regular single socket, inexpensive (in relation to a dual processor workstation mobo),overclockable motherboard. I call it having your cake and eating it too.

Exactly. It's like a big V8 engine. The high performance four-cylinder down the street may be just as 'fast', but the V8 handles any load with ease.

  3. i gotta say i love my dual core. convert mpeg 4 to vob. and play bf2 how sweet is that

  4. Absolutely agree with you there bud. Burning DVD while gaming for the win
