Apple announces $1799 MacBook Air

Today at the MacWorld 08 expo, Steve Jobs announced Apple’s new super-thin, super-light MacBook Air. Weighing in at 3lb, the Air is a mere .76″ thick at the “thick” part. Shipping standard with a 1.8″ 80gb hard drive, 2gb of RAM, and a .45nm Core2 Duo 1.6 or 1.8ghz processor, it is a fully functional computer while remaining extremely portable. 5 hours of battery life shows the improvements that have been made in CPU and energy tech in the last few years, as well.

At $1799, however, it moves into the realm of the “elite” where only the swank can afford to play. :p

Still, not gonna lie… I like… And I want.. :(

    I expect the price to fall in a few months to around the $1,300 mark. Even there it's still dear. The weight saving premium you pay isn't worth it to me.

    BTW, did you see the cost of the SSD version with the faster processor? $3,098. kthxplzdrivthru.

    I can't remember the last time Apple lowered it's price on a laptop/desktop. From what I've seen, they'll take out a gig of ram and their superdrive, make a new model and sell it at a higher price point.

    Today is one of great disappointment for me. I really had my hopes set for a tablet pc. I suppose I will have to settle for the fujitsu t2010

    It doesnt even have a CD/DVD drive in it lol, I find that funny and know that many people wont buy it because they want to be able to insert their CD/DVD's in and do whatever they want, not having to go over to another computer and put them in it and remotely access it via Remote Drive access.

    So it has its ups and downs.

    The HDD is low capasity and slow speed, but it's an iPod drive and despite the damage friends have done to their iPods I never seen the drive in one go bad. Being what the laptop represents, people will be carrying it around like they would a notebook pad. So the choice of the drive is a nice one, and only the filthy rich will be able to afford the extra grand it costs to get the better solid state drive.

    It would be awesome to have a 17" screen on a notebook like this, I think they could pull it off at the expense of maybe 1lbs extra weight and 1 hour less battery life, or maybe with the extra realistate they could keep the battery life with a bigger battery. 13.3 is enough though, becuase the incredible small size of this thing make it far more portable.

    The price ain't that bad IMHO. It would definitely be a far easier choice to make if it were $200 less though.

    Personally I don't need or want the extra ports some have complained about; Headphone, USB and MiniDVI is enough for me.

    No Superdrive? I don't remember the last time I used my CD-ROM on this laptop. I love the new iTunes features, and I am curious if Steam works on Mac becuase it has all the games I play. Other games can be downloaded as well, the only games I play that require a CD-ROM would be the Battlefield Series and that I stopped playing long ago becuase I lost interest.

    Personally I feel this laptop was designed for me, they are ballsy to leave the Superdrive out, but with internet/network delivered content this laptop will thrive. If it does I am sure we will be seeing newer versions with better graphics chipsets. It looks like a great little "toy" to me.
