camwhoreJohn Mayer just released a new video for his song “Heartbreak Warfare,” and it is the first-ever music video to feature augmented reality. By following a few instructions, augmented reality allows fans to be “in” the video.

After the Flash video loads on John Mayer’s website, viewers have to turn on their webcams, and hold up a “battle studies icon” which can be printed from the site. If the icon is correctly aligned with the webcam, the video will begin playback with the viewer in the background.

Some users have reported that the process can take a few attempts, but the website has detailed instructions on how to do it correctly.

  1. That was a letdown, I was expecting something interesting.

  2. It's a sign when John Mayer is the pioneer in something.

  3. i really don't appreciate your degradation of my love boxxy.

  4. Even the defiled picture of boxxy fills me with a rage more powerful than I've ever felt before. I once watched about 15 seconds of one of her videos, I don't know what happened next but when I came to there was nothing but charred ruins for 100 meters in all directions.

  5. I lol'd at hurr durr.

Lost Valentinos were the first to create an augmented reality music video. They beat Mayer by 3 days.
