The Chinese-language Commercial Times newspaper is reporting that the industry’s focus on a new generation of 40nm DirectX GPUs will create a shortage in older 55nm GPUs.

Since Nvidia plans to speed up adoption rate of its next generation GPUs after the launch of Windows 7, the company currently does not plan to increase its GT200 series GPU supply, as it wishes to avoid surplus inventory in the future, added the paper.

The same may also hold true for AMD which produces its popular Radeon HD 4850, 4870 and 4890 adapters on the 55nm process. The red team has recently shifted its focus towards 40nm tech with the introduction of the Radeon HD 5000 series.

  1. Dear Newegg,

Please restock the wildly popular Radeon 5850 so I can purchase one.

    Love, Cliff
