According to the Hulu blog, they will no longer support Boxee connecting to their service. Citing the requests of content providers, Hulu is removing Boxee’s ability to connect to their streaming video. Boxee is an up-and-coming media center program that allows you to connect to free video services and includes the availablity to download content.

The O’Reily Radar blog has a great post dissecting the hows and whys of the breakup:

Emphasis added: portable computing devices. Not to your TV — from your TV. To your dumb-ass laptop, you smelly, hairy, friendless, gamer-freak nerd. (Sorry, I hate to talk about you that way, but that’s how they think of the Internet. I think you smell great.) To your TV is something completely different, and from the “content providers’” point of view, completely wrong. Aren’t Apple and Tivo and YouTube bad enough as it is?

7 Comments:

  1. Big Content will never learn.

  2. Someone wrote a plugin for boxee that hacks it back in.

  3. ... when will they learn?...

  4. I'm confused, the main reason I use it is to hook my laptop up to the TV and play movies and tv shows.

  5. ...which is exactly what the Content Providers don't want you doing.

  6. Signed up for the Win XP boxee beta.
Have to wait for reply now to see if they let me in.
Seems like a good program from what I read on it.
What kind of content are you all getting with it?

  7. For some reason networks and content providers are convinced that allowing people access to their content is a bad thing.

I'm not totally sure why they think its a bad thing, but I'm sure it has something to do with ad revenue and/or some sort of "OMGWECANMAKEMONEYTHISWAY" deal.
