Rumors are flying that Legendary Pictures, the film company behind The Dark Knight, The Watchmen, and 300 may be in talks to buy Epic Games. Variety reports that negotiations have begun in North Carolina to discuss the details of the buyout.
It is believed that the negotiations likely stemmed from Legendary’s decision to finance the upcoming Gears of Wars film, based on the successful game franchise developed by Epic. If the acquisition occurs, it will mark the first time a game development firm has been purchased by a film studio.
Given the historic popularity of Epic’s Unreal Tournament and Gears of War franchises, it is seen as a strong move for both companies. Epic Games would benefit from an infusion of cash to invest in game development, and Legendary Pictures would obtain the license to Epic’s popular IP for future films.
At press time, both parties have declined to comment on the veracity of the acquisition rumors.
