Update @ 12:34 AM, 5/5/2009: Users struggling to reach the “official” page may want to try our super-secret handshake. You’ll probably have better luck with this route.

Update @ 12:26 AM, 5/5/2009: The servers are getting predictably hammered. Be patient.

After slogging through four months of betas to help polish the final version of Windows 7, you can finally enjoy the fruits of our labor with today’s introduction of the release candidate. Here’s the obligatory press release:

Welcome to Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) testing. We’re on our way to Windows 7, and if you like trying out pre-release software, now’s your chance. You get to see what’s coming, and we get to see if our changes and fixes from the Beta testing are working correctly.

How do you test the software? You put it on your PC, and then do what you’d normally do. Your PC will automatically and anonymously send our engineers the information they need to verify the fixes and changes they made based on the Windows 7 Beta tests.

If you’ve not taken the time to test any of the leaked interim builds that succeeded the February beta, you might want to take a look at what has changed.

As a final reminder, you cannot readily upgrade any prior version of Windows 7 to the release candidate. If you’ve been entertaining upgrade dreams, dash ‘em as you’ll need to perform a fresh installation this time. Still eager? Go get ‘em, tiger:

  1. Happy Cinco de Mayo.

  2. Serious no go. We need a mirror pronto!

  3. Just wait a few hours. It'll be on all the torrent sites.

  4. I grabbed mine last night to avoid this rush... I also have the Install Keys/ Codes.

I couldn't get the download to go further than 512kb last night at 12:30am.

No big deal, though. I won't be ready to install it for another week or two anyway.

  6. I was able to download it in about 15 minute this morning at work.

  7. The download has taken me about 20 minutes or so.

  8. getting it now at school. probably going to take about 1Hr for the 32 and 64 bit versions.

  9. Been running really well for me so far. XPM is pretty cool, but definitely still needs a bit of work. Shows a lot of promise, though.

I just wish my higher-horsepower desktop machine supported Intel VT, as my laptop has to work pretty hard when I have the XPM running.

  10. I have been running it since the 6th and it is running very well for me.

  11. Overall, I am remarkably impressed with Win 7. Seems to perform considerably better than Vista did on the same hardware. I have one instability issue that is related to my ASIO sound card. The lack of a proper driver being the reason. M-Audio will release a proper driver once the OS is closer to release. I actually might buy it.

    Thanks for the md5 sums.
Now I know that my downloads are ok.
    Why couldn't MS provide these?

    Anyway, thanks!
