OCZ is hoping to grow its market share in the server arena with the announcement of a revised Vertex solid state drive that packs up to 120GB of SLC NAND flash memory. The new Vertex EX-series drives will compete against Intel’s 64GB X-25E and SuperTalent’s MasterDrive RX-series drives, the former being the current volume leader in the market, and the later being the highest capacity SLC drives available in sizes up to 256GB.
SLC modules cost more than the MLC chips used predominantly in the SSD market, but they offer ten times the lifespan. For server environments where uptime is everything, it’s a critical factor.
