While technology is often the cheapest in the states, it’s rare that we see any of it first. Case in point, an Australian price-indexing service has managed to capture listings for AMD’s upcoming Phenom II CPU based on the refreshed Deneb core.

Here’s what the indexing pulled up:

Phenom II X4 920: $471.90 AUD / $304.75 USD

  • 45nm Deneb core
  • 2.8GHz
  • 2MB L2 / 6MB L3 cache
  • 125W TDP

Phenom II X4 940: $532.40 AUD / $343.82 USD

  • Black edition CPU
  • 45nm Deneb core
  • 3.0GHz
  • 2MB L2 / 6MB L3 cache
  • 125W TDP

While the USD prices will undoubtedly fluctuate due to exchange rates and marketing, we’re beginning to see the big picture. By comparison, the Core i7 920 weighs in at about $299.99 on the Egg, while its bigger brother, the Core i7 940, goes for $569.99. By any stretch of the imagination, the price of these CPUs is certainly ambitious.

Let us hope that these processors are as good as AMD needs them to be.

6 Comments:

  1. Are they really going to use the same numbering scheme as Intel? Surely not. Core Phenom ix74II 945XE?

  2. Not what I was hoping for piecewise. Looks like I'll be picking up a core duo for now.

  3. Their power consumption is still way too high for my liking. The Core 2 Quad 45nm processors of the same speed have a TDP of 95W. Hopefully AMD still has a few power saving tricks up their sleeves.

  4. It could be that they are simply rating their TDP in accordance with the standard set by Intel with the Core i7 series, all of which are rated at something like 130W. The actual TDP is lower than that. It would seem that neither manufacturer wants to show their hand when it comes to TDP, unfortunately.

The interesting thing about the TDP ratings is that they play on an old marketing gimmick: As long as you know that it's lower than they rated it, the actual differential is up to your imagination... And can be influenced by clever marketing.

  5. ^^ For another example of this, see the horsepower and torque ratings of supercars and 'high-end' American muscle cars, especially in historical terms.

We've all heard about the mythical 600 horsepower Hemi Cudas and GTOs, right? Stuff of freakin' legend!

  6. (They did wheel stands right out of the dealership parking lots.)
