Gaming roundup – Ghostbusters edition

Michigan weather is crappy and I’m achy. Game on.

  • Yesterday Activision CEO Bobby Kotick made a huge ass of himself when he claimed that any game that couldn’t be “exploited” by Activision (read: squeezed endlessly) wasn’t worth pursuing and would be dropped from their roster. One of the games that people were really up in arms about was Ghostbusters, which he called it out by name. Well it appears that Kotick didn’t stop it from being picked up for publication by Atari. Whew.
  • Age of Conan and Warhammer Online are bleeding users who are going back to World of Warcraft in droves. Blizzard president Mike Morhaime even called out numbers: 68% of /quitters who listed “Conan” as their reason for quitting have reactivated their accounts, while 46% was the number for WAR.
  • Relic Entertainment’s Tim Holman thinks PC game developers shoot themselves in the foot by developing games that require hardware upgrades. He’s got a point.
  • Looks like Nintendo is getting into the voice chat game. The new Animal Crossing for Wii will include support for the Wii Speak accessory. Instead of being a headset, Wii Speak is a mic that sits on top of the display and allows “whole rooms of people to talk to each other.” Sounds aggravating as hell. I can imagine trying to communicate with someone in a game and hearing their mom wash pots and pans in the background, or a screaming baby whose diaper needed to be changed an hour ago. Good times.
  • Badass! As part of next year’s Legendary Cars DLC add-on to Burnout Paradise, you can get a car called the Jansen 88 Special which looks suspiciously like a famous car from 1988… It only requires 1.21 JIGGAWATTS of power…
  • Just in case I haven’t talked Mirror’s Edge up enough, here’s the final launch trailer. My son has played the demo about 15 times in a row now.
  • Casual game of the day is something that will be familiar to LAN 2007 attendees. It took over for a month or so… ANTBUSTER!

  1. The wii Speak accessory certainly sounds pre-botched. Le sigh. I stopped caring back when Smash Brawl's online playability was a joke. =/
