We had the chance to open our experience with the show with a company called PureSi who was talking a 1 terabyte SSD.

Called the “Nitro,” this model uses batshit crazy chip-stacking, custom composites, and a carbon fiber enclosure to provide as much interior space for the ICs as possible. Check out the specs after the jump.

  • 240MB/s sustained read
  • 215MB/s sustained write
  • 50k random read IOPS
  • 10k random write IOPS
  • .1ms seek
  • 2.5″ form-factor
  • 2 million hour MTBF
  • Did I mention 1 terabyte?

The ICs on the interior of the unit are so densely-packed that the company is using custom composites to fit everything in its form-factor. The enclosure is carbon fiber because it was the only inexpensive material thin enough to maximize interior space. The ICs themselves are stacked instead of being a single layer on the PCB like every other SSD on the market.

1TB? Yes, please!

The drive uses MLC NAND cells, but the company couldn’t reveal who makes their chips. “It’s a big company,” they said. In the interim, development is continuing on the product which is slated for a summer release. At this time, there is no MSRP.

  1. It's gotta be insanely expensive, but that doesn't change my opinion: WANT!!!!!1111one

  2. You know you're in the big leagues when carbon fiber can be referred to as an "inexpensive" material.

  3. I believe at least one other company uses chip-stacking as well; I know SimpleTech does so with some of their SLC drives.

A terabyte in carbon fiber, though... dreamy.

  4. @GHoosdum:

Think about other materials that could be used to get an enclosure that's thin enough to do what they're doing. We're talking millimeters thin, here, and the entire enclosure isn't CF. It's not that expensive.

  5. CF is very inexpensive compared to most semi-exotic to exotic materials; particularly high-rigidity alloy metals.

  6. Gods magic touch in storage... Don't know if I would spend that much for it though...
