A 10th-grader at Shenendehowa Central School in Clifton Park, NY was charged on Thursday with with computer trespass, unlawful possession of personal identification information, and identity theft for allegedly accessing poorly-secured district bus driver records with malicious intent.
New York state trooper Maureen Tuffey describes the act as intentional. “He deceitfully used someone else’s name and password so he would not get caught and was looking to profit from his criminal act,” she said.
The student’s ability to access the sensitive records is said to be a result of the school district’s error in migrating the documents to a newly-deployed server. The student tipped his hand to the principal with an anonymous email that was later tracked back to its source with the help of district IT officials.
While some are believing the child to be a scapegoat, district spokesperson Kelly DeFeciani asserts that the violation was intentional and malicious. “I can say, however, that the student’s motive was not to ‘do us a favor,’ the file was not ’stumbled upon,’ and this was not a first offense by this student,” she said in a public statement responding to a mass of inquiries.
Due to the age of the accused, the name is being witheld from the media during the ongoing investigation.
