Sun releases “World’s fastest [...] chip”

Robert Hallock (Thrax) Did we say "World's fastest? Oops! Add a sprinkling of marketing, there..."

Sun releases the “World’s fastest multi-core commodity chip,” whatever that means in the fantastical world of benchmarketing. Weighing in at a bantam 1.4GHz, this octal-core CPU rocks 64 threads, quad IMCs and eight lanes of PCIe I/O. They make this claim based on a pair of “Record-setting SPEC benchmark results,” which is a bit like saying it’s been the heaviest rain season ever because there’s a foot of rainwater in a bucket.

But, hey, fastest multi-core commodity chip. Who are we to argue?

Cheers.
