The Windows 7 Party Host chat forums are abuzz with news that unscrupulous hosts are pawning off their “Steve Ballmer Signature Edition” of Windows 7 Ultimate and their Party Packs on Ebay.
Now, to be frank, it wasn’t hard to become a Windows 7 Party Host–there are at least three Icrontic members that we are aware of that have been selected to be hosts. It stands to reason that there are a few bad apples in every bunch and it’s really no surprise that these party packs have been showing up on the ‘tubes.
The party pack contains things like Windows 7-branded playing cards, a jigsaw puzzle, napkins, balloons, and streamers among other things. There’s probably some sort of collector value attached to this stuff, but in the end it is most likely the lure of getting a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate for less than retail and before it’s available in stores that will sell these packages.
There has been no official word from Microsoft on any potential repercussions for buying (or selling) these illicit copies of Windows 7, either from the House Party forums or emailed directly to party hosts.
Update: Windows 7 Party Hosts are up in arms about this issue on the official forums. They are, as a group, policing Ebay and reporting any and all occurrences of these auctions. It’s quite impressive to see a community rally around this issue so quickly and decisively.
