The FTC has published a list of proposals that, in part, directly advise the company on how to simplify the terms of their x86 and chipset licenses in favor of competitors. Will it do anything?

Based on a modern contemporary of the C language called C99, OpenCL is a framework that rapidly and easily assists developers in the creation of scalable applications. Imagine a single body of code that could just as easily run on a CPU, GPU, DSP, or any other execution engine; that is the promise of OpenCL. [...]

Remember when Intel complained that the establishment of GlobalFoundries was in violation of the x86 cross-licensing agreement with AMD?

This one is a heaping pile of speculation, rumor, tips and hearsay, so stick with me on this one.
Yesterday we brought you word that Microsoft had entered the RC escrow phase of development when it compiled build 7105. This is true, and we have some additional details regarding this situation that we’d like to share [...]

NVIDIA was on hand yesterday to speak at the Morgan Stanley Technology conference in San Francisco. The last 00:01:40 of the hour segment was easily the most interesting. The discussion started with an overview of NVIDIA’s position on Intel’s Larrabee GPU, moved to the Tegra, and ended with an admission that Big Green would like [...]

As both companies spiral into the inescapable mire of the current economy, tensions are clearly running high. AMD CEO Dirk Meyer recently took the time during a press and analyst call to lash out at Intel for their x86 sabre rattling.
Not only is Intel continuing to claim that AMD cannot transfer their x86 license to [...]

In what can only be described as an exchange that keeps the market competitive, AMD and Intel have a comprehensive set of cross-licensing agreements. Amongst the most notable is AMD’s permission to use Intel’s x86 architecture and Intel’s permission to use AMD’s x86-64. Both patent suites, now a cornerstone of the CPU industry, are the [...]
